After reading this NYTimes article I had to give Boxee a try. Boxee is an open source service that creates a really nice interface for accessing all kinds of media on your computer (Mac or Linux only for now – that’s a funny twist on the usual route) or AppleTV. You can then plug it in to your TV and, for the most part, kiss your cable company goodbye! That’s the dream, anyway. So I put it on my MacBook Pro and indeed it is a sweet interface to TV, movies, Internt video, media you have stored on you hard drive, just about anything you can think of.
In addition, Boxee incorporates a nice social networking system so you can find what others are watching and share your own media. You can also easily make some media private. But you don’t need me to explain it for you. Watch the introductory video.

I’d love to hear what you think. And if you join Boxee, let me know. I’d love to share.
BTW – Boxee added support for ABC today.

between the web, xbox360, and now the wii the bride and I are very close to dumping cable. when is pc version of boxee coming?
I believe you are correct, Mike.
BTW – I don’t believe you can run Boxee on non-Intel Macs.
It may kill cable for me. I’ve been following Boxee for a while. I am anxious to get it loaded on my AppleTV.
I haven’t built my linux media box yet, but surprisingly I’m getting some good mileage out of youtube.com/tv and my trusty PS3.. though on my brother’s Wii it’s even slicker.
